The owner of a Sunseeker Portofino asked Ocean Marine Services to restore the vessel’s propulsion systems to peak condition. Both Volvo Penta AD41 diesel engines and the Volvo Penta DPE stern drives had seen heavy use and were beginning to show wear that was affecting performance and reliability. To ensure long-term dependability and restore the yacht’s handling and efficiency, we recommended complete rebuilds of both engines and drives.
The work presented several challenges. Internal inspections revealed that many components within the engines and drives were worn, requiring complete strip-downs and professional rebuilds. Reinstallation demanded absolute precision, as both engines and stern drives needed to be aligned exactly to Volvo Penta specifications to prevent vibration, handling issues or premature wear. In addition, the client required the project to be completed within a limited timeframe so the vessel was ready for the upcoming boating season.
Ocean Marine Services began by removing both AD41 engines and DPE stern drives for detailed inspection at our workshop. Each engine was fully disassembled, cleaned and rebuilt with new pistons, rings, liners, bearings and seals. The cylinder heads were overhauled with valves serviced, while the fuel injection pumps and injectors were reconditioned and the turbochargers inspected and restored. The DPE stern drives were also stripped, with worn bearings, seals and gears replaced. Corrosion treatment and refinishing work was carried out to protect the drives for future use.
Once complete, the engines and drives were reinstalled into the Sunseeker Portofino with meticulous alignment to manufacturer standards. The propulsion system was first tested on shore before comprehensive sea trials confirmed smooth operation, restored power delivery and full reliability under real conditions.
The Sunseeker Portofino’s propulsion system was restored to factory-level performance, with both Volvo Penta AD41 engines and DPE drives now running as though new. The project returned the yacht to peak condition, giving the owner the confidence to enjoy many more seasons of safe and trouble-free boating.
