Sunseeker Manhattan 52
We recently completed a Coppercoat re-coat on a Sunseeker Manhattan 52, returning to a vessel that we first treated with Coppercoat approximately 11 years ago.
The original Coppercoat application was carried out by Ocean Marine Services, making this a particularly satisfying project for our team. After more than a decade of service, the decision was made to renew the coating system and give the hull a fresh start for the years ahead.
Coppercoat is designed as a long-term underwater coating system, and this project provided a great opportunity to see the longevity of an installation we originally completed more than a decade ago.
After 11 years, the existing system had reached the point where a re-coat was appropriate. Rather than simply applying new material over the existing surface, the hull was carefully prepared to provide the correct foundation for the new system.
Preparation is one of the most important parts of any coating project.
For the Manhattan 52, the hull was prepared before applying a new epoxy coat, providing the appropriate base for the Coppercoat application.
Once the preparation was complete, the new system was applied using five coats of Coppercoat, with careful attention paid throughout the application process to achieve a consistent finish.
There is something particularly rewarding about working on a boat more than a decade after carrying out the original installation.
The project gave us the opportunity to inspect the results of our original work and then apply a new Coppercoat system to take the vessel forward for another period of service.
For the owner, it also provides continuity — the same team that originally installed the system is now carrying out its renewal 11 years later.
The Manhattan 52 now has a freshly prepared hull and a new five-coat Coppercoat system, ready to return to the water.
For owners considering Coppercoat, or those with an existing system that is approaching the end of its service life, the project demonstrates the importance of proper preparation, application and ongoing maintenance.
At Ocean Marine Services, we can advise on the condition of an existing Coppercoat system and whether it is suitable for renewal, as well as discuss Coppercoat as an alternative to traditional antifouling for new projects.
Another OMS project completed — and, in this case, a return to a boat we first worked on over a decade ago.
