Fairline Targa 38 Volvo Penta D4-300 Flood Damage Replacement

Vessel Overview

Vessel: Fairline Targa 38
Engines: Twin Volvo Penta D4-300
Scope of Work: Removal, installation of new long blocks, component transfer and full recommissioning after flood damage

After a flooding incident, the owner’s twin Volvo Penta D4-300 engines suffered severe saltwater damage. With extensive internal corrosion and system contamination, the most effective solution was to replace both engines with new genuine Volvo Penta long blocks. Ocean Marine Services carried out the complete marine engineering project with the goal of returning the vessel to service quickly, while ensuring long-term reliability through detailed yacht maintenance and system restoration.

Challenges of the Refit

This project presented several challenges. The saltwater ingress had caused severe internal corrosion, damaging the cylinder walls, bearings and valve train components. The lubrication, cooling and fuel systems were all at risk due to contamination from salt and debris. The confined engine bay of the Fairline Targa 38 also required careful handling during the removal and installation process to avoid damage to surrounding equipment. In addition to these factors, the timeframe was tight as the owner wanted the yacht ready for the summer cruising season.

Our Marine Engineering Approach

Ocean Marine Services began by removing both engines and carrying out a detailed inspection to confirm the extent of the flood damage. New Volvo Penta D4-300 long blocks were sourced and prepared for installation. Reusable ancillary components such as alternators, starter motors, heat exchangers and turbochargers were thoroughly cleaned, serviced and transferred to the new engines with all gaskets, seals and fixings replaced. The cooling, fuel and exhaust systems were flushed, cleaned and pressure-tested to ensure that no contamination remained. Once prepared, the engines were aligned, installed and tested on the hard before being run at sea trials to confirm reliable performance.

Outcome of the Powerboat Refit

The replacement of the twin Volvo Penta D4-300 engines restored the Fairline Targa 38 to full factory-standard condition. The yacht returned to the water with smooth handling, improved efficiency and complete dependability. Thanks to expert marine engineering and careful project management, Ocean Marine Services delivered the vessel ahead of schedule and ensured the owner was ready for a trouble-free summer cruising season on the South Coast.
