Maintenance, Servicing and housekeeping
As the boating season draws to a close, autumn is an ideal time to arrange servicing and maintenance before the winter months.
Whether your boat is coming ashore or remaining in the water, taking care of essential maintenance and preparing the interior can help prevent problems and ensure you’re ready for the next season.
What should you consider?
Engine and drive servicing
Routine servicing, including oil and filter changes, cooling system checks and drive maintenance, helps keep your engine reliable and ready for the season ahead.
Batteries and electrical systems
Check battery condition, charging systems and electrical connections, particularly if your boat will be used less frequently over winter.
Cooling and fuel systems
Depending on your engine and how the boat will be stored, appropriate winter protection may be required to help prevent frost damage and other issues.
Prepare the interior
Remove cushions, bedding and other soft furnishings where practical to help prevent damp and mildew. Consider using a suitable dehumidifier to control moisture, and a thermostatically controlled heater where appropriate and safe to do so.
Water systems
If your boat is being laid up, drain water tanks and the freshwater system as appropriate, leaving taps open after draining to help relieve pressure and allow remaining water to escape. Remember that boilers, pumps, filters and other components may also need draining or frost protection.
Outstanding repairs and upgrades
Winter can be a good opportunity to tackle repairs or plan improvements, from bow and stern thrusters to navigation equipment and other onboard systems, while your boat is being used less frequently.
